University of Colombo, the nation’s premier state higher educational institution celebrates the 100th anniversary of the establishment of its Faculties of Science and Arts this year. Inaugurated as the University College of Ceylon in 1921, the University of Colombo has pioneered university education in the country becoming a world renowned university and the number one ranked university in Sri Lanka.
Situated in the heart of Colombo, University of Colombo has dominated the skyline of the Colombo’s most prestigious address, that of Reid Avenue, for over a century. The University has grown immensely in this period and continues to grow, offering state-of-the-art degree programs, conducting cutting-edge research, and providing world-class facilities to its students and staff.
Computing became an integral part of Science curricula in the year 1967, making the University an early adopter and one of the first major universities to offer such curricula in our region. Over a half a century, the discipline of Computing has diversified into many programs and study streams at the university creating a dedicated School to further its goals, as University of Colombo School of Computing.
In celebration of the centenary anniversary of the University of Colombo and 50 years of Computing education, the University of Colombo School of Computing takes pride in unveiling the ‘Computing Museum of University of Colombo’ at its premises, the first of its kind in Sri Lanka. Simultaneously, an eMuseum online at emuseum.cmb.ac.lk will be inaugurated to provide a virtual immersive experience to students and visitors alike, with quizzes and dynamic displays. The museum encapsulates the progression of computing education at the University through the display of the computing devices that have been used there over the last 50 years.
