University of Colombo
Colombo University Computer Museum is scheduled to be unveiled on the 21st January 2021 in commemoration of 100 years of the establishment of the faculties of science and arts of the UoC. The Computing History Museum at UCSC showcases many facets including the proud history of over 50 years of computing at the University of Colombo, decades of technology evolution and the computing machinery initially used for higher education in the country. The collection will continue in the years to come for future generations to inspire, educate, and as a showcase of its legacy.
As part of the centennial celebrations of the Faculties of Science and Arts of the University of Colombo and of the University Library, the University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC) will unveil the ‘University of Colombo Computer Museum’ at its premises, the first of its kind in Sri Lanka, along with an online e-museum at emuseum.cmb.ac.lk. This was inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor, University of Colombo, Senior Professor Chandrika Wijjeyaratne on 21st January 2021, at the UCSC.
The computing education, research and development at the University of Colombo is more than 50 years from the formal inception of the university on 21st January 1921. The initiative of computing was started in September 1967 by Vidya Jothi Professor VK Prof Samaranayake at the Faculty of Science, University of Colombo while benefiting students and staff of other faculties, including the faculty of Arts from a course module to degree programmes both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
